Leaves are alternate or opposite, rarely whorled, simple, whole; petioles short or absent, stipules absent. On the petiole, at the base of the leaf, along the main vein or along the edges, glands can often be seen, because of which the leaf in these places may look translucent.
The flowers are bisexual or less often unisexual, usually radially symmetrical, usually collected in apical or axillary inflorescences . The type of inflorescence varies, but most often there is an ear with an elongated axis, a brush or a panicle . The perianth , in the lower part fused with the ovary , is located at the top of the tubular epigone zone ; a calyx consists of 4-5 separate or partially fused sepals ; the corolla most often has 4-5 petals . The male part of the flower consists of 4-10 stamens adjacent to the epigonal zone, most often located in two rows, often prominent. Gynoecium (female part of the flower) is a single complex pestle , consisting of 2-5 carpels ; lower ovary, with one chamber containing 2 (-6) ovules , suspended from the top of the ovary on a long spermatic cord. A nectar disc (often pubescent), round or consisting of 5-10 lobes, is located on top of the ovary. The fruit is a single seed, often oblate, ribbed, or winged drupes .
Most of the species are combined into the genera combretum ( Combretum ) and terminalia ( Terminalia ), each of them consists of about 250 species.
