Story
1945 year. Japan Two American bomber aircraft are approaching Nagasaki . An alarm rises, everyone in a hurry is evacuated, this is watched by Logan locked in a well ( Hugh Jackman ). Japanese soldier Itiro Yashida ( Ken Yumamura ) frees him by cutting the chains, but Logan says that it’s safe in the well. At this point, one of the aircraft drops a bomb and an explosion occurs that destroys the vicinity of Nagasaki. Logan saves Yashida in the well by covering him with a stove. Yashida clearly saw his ability to regenerate and in gratitude gives him his sword.
The near future. Logan’s superpowers are not only a gift, but also a peculiar curse that does not allow him to exist as an ordinary person. To cope with this burden, Logan settles in a remote Canadian province and leads the life of a hermit, abusing alcohol. In his dreams, Jean Gray ( Famke Janssen ), whom he killed, appears. Once in the forest he finds a dying bear, who was shot by a poisoned arrow by hunters, and comes to the village to punish them. At the bar, Logan meets a Japanese woman named Yukio ( Rila Fukushima ), who can not only fight well, but also predict the future (though her gift is limited only by visions of death). Yukio tells Logan that he has been looking for him for a long time and that she was sent by the aged and rich Yashida ( Harukiko Yamanouchi ), who is now dying and wants to say goodbye to Logan.
Arriving in Japan, Logan sees that Yashida is really dying of cancer . His life is supported by complex devices, which are followed by Dr. Victoria Green ( Svetlana Khodchenkova ). Yashida offers Logan to give his gift of regeneration to him, and in return promises Logan the opportunity to live normally, grow old and die. Logan refuses, saying that Yashida does not understand what he asks for. In the house of an influential entrepreneur, Logan meets Mariko ( Tao Okamoto ), the granddaughter of Yashida, whom she saves from suicide. At night, Logan sees Jean Gray in a dream, after which he wakes up and sees that Victoria Green is kissing him. That same night, Yashida dies.
During the funeral, Logan meets Shingen ( Hiroyuki Sanada ), Yashida's son and father Mariko, as well as her future fiancé Noburo Mori ( Brian Ti ), who holds the post of Minister of Justice . The ceremony is interrupted when fighters of the Japanese organized criminal group - the Yakuza, are trying to abduct Mariko. Logan and Yukio deal with the yakuza, and a mysterious ninja with a bow covers them from the roof. Logan understands that Mariko must protect the life, and follows her. On the Shinkansen high-speed train, the couple travels to the south of Japan , where the Yashida family has a house on the sea. On the train, Logan realizes that his wounds do not heal. After a fight with four yakuza (including on the roof of the train) Logan is greatly weakened. In Fukuyama, the couple stops at a hotel for lovers, in a space room, however, Logan does not sleep, and Mariko rests on the balcony all night. Dr. Victoria Green and the mysterious ninja are looking for a couple in the city. It turns out that Dr. Green is actually a mutant , the Viper , capable of poisoning people with its poison .
Meanwhile, the weakened Logan is losing consciousness. Mariko saves him by taking the hotel owner, a veterinary student, to his nephew, who pulls out bullets from Logan's body and bandages his wounds. From Fukuyama, the couple travels to a house in the vicinity of Nagasaki, where Logan saved Yashida. In a house on the sea, Mariko explains to Logan the meaning of what is happening. It turns out that the grandfather bequeathed a huge company "Yashida" to her, and not to her father Shingen. Mariko tells Logan about the mysterious archer on the roof. It was Kenutiyo Harada ( Will Yun Lee ), the leader of the ninja clan, who had long served the Yashida house, as well as Mariko's former lover. Mariko admits that he does not love his current bridegroom, but will marry him so as not to violate the will of his father, who wants to enter big politics. But the attraction to Logan is stronger than obligations: Mariko and Logan are in love with each other and spend the night together. The next morning, Logan discovers that Mariko was abducted by the Yakuza. Killing one of the attackers, Logan is not able to stop the others, because he lost the ability to regenerate. Yukio, arriving at the scene, takes Logan back to Tokyo , but asks Logan to take care of himself. She says that she saw him die, holding her heart in her hands.
Logan and Yukio visit the groom Mariko, who, in the absence of the bride, spends time with prostitutes . Noburo Mori tells Logan that Yashida spent a fortune, almost ruining his company, looking for adamantium and everything that could bring to Logan, since after Nagasaki, Yashida was obsessed with the idea of a healing factor. He also said that Mariko wants to kill her own father, who knows about the will. In parallel, Victoria Green and the ninja warriors visit the house of the Yashid family. Green poisons Shingen and takes Mariko.
Having visited the Yashida's house, Logan lays down on the operating table and tries to extract a bug from his body launched by the Viper, which sticks to the heart itself and weakens it. At this moment, he was attacked by the recruited Shingen in samurai armor . While Logan is trying to extract a bug from his body, Yukio fights with Shingen. During the operation, Logan's heart stops, but the ability to regenerate returns and heals Logan. After killing Shingen, he goes to the native village of Yashida, where he is “invited” by a note left by the Viper on one of the corpses, and where the Yashida company built a laboratory on the side of the mountain.
Upon Logan's arrival in the village, he is met by a ninja army led by Harada. And although Logan returned his healing factor, he can’t cope with all the opponents, and Harada’s shot with an arrow poisoned by the Viper’s poison deprives him of consciousness. Logan comes to himself, chained to a special chair with shackles that fix his hands in one position. The Viper approaches him and admits that she introduced a bug into him and did not expect Logan to be able to extract it. She also shows him the Silver Samurai - a huge robot in the form of samurai armor from adamantium. The viper provokes Logan to release his claws, and the mechanism in the shackles blocks them, preventing them from being pulled back inside. A silver samurai comes up to him and prepares to cut off his claws with a red-hot adamantium sword , but Mariko bothers him, and Logan is freed. During the fight, Harada goes to the side of Logan and falls into the Viper with an arrow, but she quickly heals, dropping her skin like a snake . Arriving Yukio enters the fray with the Viper and kills her. During the battle, the Silver Samurai cuts Logan's claws on one arm. Harada prevents him from finishing Logan, but he perishes. Taking one of the swords from Samurai, Logan cuts off his head. The seemingly defeated robot cuts off Logan's claws from the other hand. It turns out that this is not a robot, but Yashida, placed in huge adamantium armor that supports life in him. Grabbing Logan by the hands, he drives into the stump of each of his claws a drill and begins to pump bone marrow and regeneration ability out of him, killing Logan and regaining his youth. But in time, Mariko, throwing Logan's severed claw at his grandfather, hits him in the head, and then finishes him, plunging a second claw into his neck. Yashida throws Logan, but driven drills rip from the hands of the remains of the adamantium claws. In a rage, Logan tears off Yashida's armor at chest level and, releasing the restored bone claws, pierces him with them, and then throws him through the broken wall into the abyss.
The film ends with Logan leaving Japan, flying on a private plane of Yashida Corporation, along with Yukio, who volunteered to be his bodyguard.
In an alternate scene on the plane, Yukio gives Logan a black and yellow costume that Wolverine wore in comics.
In the scene after the credits, Logan, 2 years later, returns to the United States . At the airport, he encounters Eric Lensherr ( Ian McKellen ), who has regained his strength, who asks Logan for help against a new enemy threatening to destroy all the mutants. Logan refuses to help Magneto, but professor Charles Xavier ( Patrick Stewart ), who appears, convinces Logan of the opposite.
Cast
The film involves more than 50 actors, not counting extras actors.

Production
Development
In September 2009, the director of the movie " X-Men: The Beginning. Wolverine ” Gavin Hood suggested that the continuation would take place in Japan . In one of Huda's films, one of the scenes after the credits showed Logan drinking at a bar in Japan. Japan was the main scene of the 1982 1982 limited - edition Wolverine comic strip by screenwriter Chris Clermont and artist Frank Miller . There was no story with Japan in the first film, as Jackman felt that "you first need to tell about the origin of Logan and show how he became Wolverine." [13] [14] Jackman stated that the Clermont / Miller series is his favorite Wolverine story:
| I will not lie to you, I spoke with the authors. I am a big fan of the Japanese comic book saga. ” [15] [16] [17] |
Before the premiere of the film " X-Men: The Beginning. Wolverine ”Lauren Schuler Donner invited Simon Beaufoy to write the script for“ Wolverine ”, but he refused, because he felt insufficiently confident for this. [18] On May 5, 2009, four days after the premiere, the sequel was officially confirmed. [nineteen]
The main plus of the new film is that Wolverine’s fighting style will be different from everything seen before - Mariko’s father owns something like a pole , and Logan will have to fight against him. We also have samurai , ninja, katana , various martial arts and extreme fighting game. For the sake of reliability, the shooting is likely to take place in Japan, but all the characters will speak English. The producer is going to enlist the support of the Japanese branch of Fox to adequately convey an unfamiliar culture on the screen. - Lauren Schuler Donner [20] |
Christopher McQuarrie , one of the screenwriters of the X-Men film, whose name was not shown on the credits, was hired in August 2009 to write the script to continue. [21] According to Lauren Schuler Donner, the sequel will focus on the relationship between Logan and the daughter of Japanese criminal lord Mariko, whose action will take place in Japan. [22] In January 2010, at the People's Choice Award, Jackman announced that he would begin filming in 2011 [23] , and in March McQuarrie announced that the script was over and production would begin next January. [24] After Brian Singer refused the offer to make the film [25] , negotiations began with Darren Aronofsky . [26]
Pre-Production
In October 2010, it was confirmed that Aronofsky would be the director of the film. [27] Jackman noted that Wolverine 2 from Darren would be an unusual film, stating:
| This is Wolverine. This is not a popeye . This hero is gloomy in nature. I'm sure Aronofsky will make a science fiction film. It will make more sense. The audience will have something to think about when they leave the cinema. ” [28] [29] |
Also in October, it was reported that the filming will begin in March 2011 in New York, after which the production of the film will move to Japan for the main shootings. [thirty]
In November 2010, Aronofsky stated that the film would be called The Wolverine and described it as a standalone film, not a sequel. [31]
In March 2011, Darren Aronofsky resigned as director, saying that because of the project, he would have been away from his family for a year. The reason for refusing to direct the film was also his divorce from Rachel Weiss and the question of custody of his son. Fox also decided not to rush to start production of the film due to damage to Japan during the 2011 earthquake [32] and set about looking for a new director. [33]
In March 2011, Variety announced that 20th Century Fox had a short list of eight candidates to replace Aronofsky. This list includes directors Jose Padilla , Doug Lyman , Antoine Fouqua , Marc Romanek , Justin Lin , Gavin O'Connor , James Mangold and Gary Shore . [34] In June 2011, Deadline.com announced that Fox was in the process of negotiating a project with James Mangold and was planning to begin filming in the fall of 2011. [35] In July 2011, Jackman admitted that he planned to start filming in October 2011 and that he would fight the Silver Samurai in the film. [36]
In August 2011, it was reported that filming would take place from November 11, 2011 to March 1, 2012 at the Canadian Motion Picture Park in Burnaby , where Twilight , Supernatural and Fantastic Four were also filmed. [37] However, later filming was postponed until the spring of 2012 so that Hugh Jackman could star in the movie Les Miserables . In September 2012, Mark Bomback was hired to rewrite McQuarrie's script. [38]
In the same month, the official slogan for the film was confirmed: "When he is the most vulnerable, he is the most dangerous!"
In February 2012, the premiere date of the film was set on July 26, 2013. [7] In April, it was reported that due to financial and tax benefits, filming will begin in August 2012 and will mainly take place in Australia. [39] In July 2012, it became known that Hiroyuki Sanada would play Shingen, Harukiko Yamanouchi - Yashida, Tao Okamoto - Mariko and Rila Fukushima - Yukio. [9] In addition, Will Yoon Lee got the role of Harada, better known as the Silver Samurai, and Brian Ti - the role of the corrupt Minister of Justice Noburo Mori, who is about to marry Mariko, the daughter of the crime lord Yakuza . [11] On July 13, 2012, it was reported that Jessica Biel was offered the role of the Viper [40] . A few days later, the Collider website reported that the negotiations between Bill and 20th Century Fox were not successful and the studio began searching for another actress. [41] Later in July it became known that Fox had begun negotiations with Svetlana Khodchenkova . [42] On August 16, Khodchenkova’s participation in the film was officially confirmed. [12]
Filming
Filming with a budget of more than $ 100 million [43] began July 30, 2012 in Carnell, New South Wales on the shores of the Gulf of Botany . [44] Filming at Carnell ended on August 2. On August 3, filming moved to Picton. [45] On August 25, filming began in Japan. [46] Filming facilities in Tokyo included the Tokyo Television Tower and the Jojo-ji Temple. [47] On September 4, filming took place at the Fukuyama Railway Station. [48] On October 8, 2012, the production of the film returned to Australia and filming took place in Sydney and Parramatta . [49] [50] Also in October, James Mangold told Empire magazine that the action of Wolverine occurs after the events of the X-Men movie : The Last Battle . [6] On October 25, 2012, the production of the film moved to Sydney Olympic Park, where the scenery of a Japanese snowy village was created. [51] [52] On November 10, 2012, filming took place at Surry Hills. [53] Filming ended on November 21, 2012. [54]
The subtitle "Immortal" film has in Russia, Argentina , Brazil , Chile , Spain and Italy . In France , the film has the subtitle “The Battle of the Immortal” , in Japan - “Samurai” , in Germany - “The Way of the Warrior” . [eight]
According to James Mangold, the inspiration for the film was the samurai movie 13 Killers and the Samurai trilogy about Miyamoto Musashi ; Westerns " Shane " and " Josie Wales - a man outlawed "; crime films French Connected and Chinatown ; and the dramas Black Daffodil , Floating Herbs , Chongqing Express , and Happy Together [55] [56] [57] .
