Biography
Giorgio Gusmini was born in Gadzanig , Italy, as the son of Santo Gusmini and Maddalena Canyoni. His father died when George was only five years old. He was educated at the local diocesan church in Bergamo. From 1869 he went to Rome to study at the Pontifical Roman Athenaeum of Rome until 1875. On July 7, 1878, he received a doctorate in theology .
Priesthood
He was ordained to the priesthood on September 8, 1878. He served as a professor of literature and philosophy at the seminary of Bergamo from 1882 to 1888. He was transferred to the post of professor of literature, philosophy and history at the Collegium of San Alessandro, Bergamo, where he remained until 1890. He also worked in the diocese of Bergamo from 1878 to 1880. He was one of the founders of the Catholic University Society. He returned to pastoral work in Bergamo from 1888 to 1910. He worked as an archpriest and vicar at Clusone in 1902.
