The peak is located in the southern part of the island, near Yuzhno-Sakhalinsk [2] . Named in honor of the Russian writer A.P. Chekhov , who visited Sakhalin in 1890 [3] . During the period of Japanese Karafuto , Chekhov's peak was revered as a sacred mountain. Then at the top was built a small temple house dedicated to the sun goddess Amaterasu . Currently, hiking is developed on the mountain, there are marked hiking trails.
