History
At the end of the 19th century, there was not a single public library in the city. Beginning in 1895 , the city intelligentsia petitioned through the Tsaritsyno City Council to open a library. It took five years for the governor to allow the library to be opened at public expense.
July 23, 1900 the city library began to work. However, it was not free - the governor refused to approve the clause on free use of literature, and therefore had to pay for reading: for reading at home - 15 kopecks per month, in the library - 3 kopecks. The initial fund was 533 books, and by 1917 it amounted to 8923 volumes.
March 2, 1928 , on the eve of the 60th anniversary of the writer and the 35th anniversary of his creative activity, the Provincial Executive Committee decided to name the library as the "Provincial Central Public Library named after M. Gorky."
On the eve of World War II, the library was in a two-story mansion on the corner of the street. Thieves and the embankment of the Volga. At that time, it was the largest book depository of the region; its fund was 205 thousand copies, and the number of readers reached 18 thousand people. The library staff consisted of 24 employees, while only two of them had higher library education.
On August 23, 1942, Stalingrad was bombarded, with a direct bomb hit the library building was completely destroyed, all funds and the staff who were in the building were killed.
In March 1943, the revival of the regional library began, which began work in Beketovka . Books came from all over the country, the first readers appeared. Librarians, in addition to their main work, participated in the Cherkasy movement , restoring the city center, where the library later returned, occupying the first floor of the building of the Higher Party School on the Square of the Fallen Fighters .
In 1985, the regional library. Gorky received a separate building on Mira Street , where it was opened on April 18, 1985 .
