Bujar Faik Nishani ( Alb. Bujar Faik Nishani ; born September 29, 1966 ) - Albanian statesman, President of Albania from July 24, 2012 ^[1] to July 24, 2017 .

Biography

Nishani was born in the city of Durres on September 29, 1966 .

Education

In 1988 he graduated from the military academy in Tirana . In the mid-90s, he left for the United States and in 1996 graduated from the University of San Antonio ( Texas ). Later he was transferred to the graduate school of one of the universities of California , where in 1997 he received a degree. In 2005 he received a Master of European Science degree.

Political activities

In 1991 he became a member of the Democratic Party of Albania . In 1997 he returned to Albania . After the defeat of the Democratic Party in the elections to the People’s Assembly in 1997, he headed the non-governmental organization “Military Euro-Atlantic Forum”.

In 2007, he became Minister of the Interior of Albania. In 2009 , when Albania joined NATO , he left the Ministry of Internal Affairs and became Minister of Justice. In 2011 he returned to the Ministry of Internal Affairs and again became its head. He participated in the presidential elections in Albania in 2012 and won them. On July 24, 2012, he assumed his duties and was at the head of Albania until July 2017.

On November 24, 2014, President Nishani issued a decree posthumously awarding the Order of Honor of the Nation to several anti-communist politicians who were executed in 1945 under the sentence of the Special Court (including the former minister in the collaborationist government of Cola Tromara ^[2] ). This decision provoked not only positive responses: some authors believe that this reflected Nishan’s party-ideological preferences ^[3] .
