Biography

In 1713 - 1715, Selyamet Geray was an orbey ( governor of Perekop ). He was a noureddin ( 1724 - 1727 ) and kalga ( 1727 - 1730 , 1737 - 1740 ) under Mengli II Gerai , after whose death he ascended the khan’s throne, and the Crimeans themselves wished that Selyamet Gerai would become the successor to the respected Mengli II Gerai . The Sultan approved their decision. Having occupied the khan’s throne, Selyamet II appointed his nephews Azamat Geray (the son of Khan Gaza III Geray ) and Kaligoy Gehray (the son of Khan Mengli II Geray ) as kalga and nureddin . In 1741, Selyamet II Gerai replaced Kalam Azamat Geray and appointed another nephew of another nephew Selim Geray , the son of Khan Kaplan I Geray .

Selyamet II Gerai was engaged in the restoration of the capital, which lay in ruins after the Russian pogrom. Under his rule, a large-scale reconstruction of the entire Khan's Palace and, in particular, the Great Khan's Mosque began. In several buildings of the palace (the Great and Small Khan's mosques, the Divan Hall portal) there are still inscriptions mentioning the name of the khan of the restorer.

In foreign policy, Khan was worried about the growth of Russian expansion . He had a plan together with European countries (in particular, with Sweden ) to resist it, but under the conditions of the Turkish-Russian world, the sultan did not allow the khan to implement any projects in this area. Moreover, for the unauthorized anti-Russian actions of the khan's subjects, the sultan accused the khan of failing to comply with the peace treaty - and in 1743 Seliemet II Gerai lost the khan's title. Selyamet II was characterized as a pure-hearted, kind and pious man. Settled near Yanbolu (now Bulgaria ), where he studied theology. In 1751, he died and was buried near the city mosque.
