History
The Church of St. Francis in Lorca was built at the monastery of St. Francis in 1561 . Initially, the temple consisted of a nave with chapels between pilasters and covered with a cassette ceiling. The portal was created by Lorenzo de Goenaha.
Around 1638, work began on raising the height of the nave. In the same century, a bell tower was built and a second portal was erected. By the end of the century, in 1694, Hines Lopez created a beautiful baroque altar . In the 18th century, the interior of the church was decorated with rococo statues of saints.
During the 2011 earthquake , the temple was badly damaged, but was soon restored, thanks to the efforts of the Brotherhood of the Old Week in Lorca, whose headquarters is located at the church. The state was also involved in the restoration of the temple. The Church of St. Francis became the first temple of Lorca, in which services were resumed after the earthquake [1] .
During Holy Week from the Church of St. Francis, the already mentioned penitential brotherhood performs processions. Among the most vivid images taken out of the temple on these processions is the image of Our Lady of Sorrow , the main patroness of the brotherhood.
Description
The temple is a basilica with a single nave, covered with a vault with chapels between the pillars. Chief kamarin built in the second half of the XVIII century in the Rococo style, a small staircase leads to it.
The portal is built in the form of a triumphal arch with elongated niches between the columns. In the second tier of the facade there is a niche in which the sculpture of the Mother of God with the baby is located. In the lower part of the facade one can discern the influence of the architecture of the local church of St. Patrick. Above the portal is the coat of arms of Lorca.
The bell tower, the clock tower, consists of four tiers. On the bell tower is a bell cast in Vitoria and a bell cast in Lorca in 1953 .
The interior of the temple is represented by baroque altars , the most beautiful in the region of Murcia . This is the altar of 1694, the work of Hines Lopez, the altar of the side ( 1730 and 1735 years ) the work of Gheronimro Caballero. The right is dedicated to the life and wonders of St. Anthony, left to the Cross and the Blood of Christ. As well as the altar of Our Lady of Sorrows ( 1691 ) works of Manuel Caro.
