Biography

The representative of the family of outstanding Danish scientists, many of whom worked in the field of medicine. His sons: doctor , mathematician and theologian Thomas Bartolin ( 1616 - 1680 ) and mathematician and doctor Rasmus Bartolin ( 1625 - 1698 ); grandson - anatomist and politician Caspar Bartholin, Jr. ( 1655 - 1738 ). Among his relatives were 12 professors from the University of Copenhagen .

From childhood he showed extraordinary abilities, at the age of three he learned to read, at the age of 13 he published a speech in Greek and Latin .

In 1603 he entered the University of Copenhagen , later continued his studies at the universities of Rostock and Wittenberg , where he studied first theology and philology , and then medicine.

Then he made a series of travels in Germany, Holland, England, France and Italy, and was received with great respect at various universities he visited.

For some time engaged in medical practice in Wittenberg . In 1611 he was invited to Copenhagen to occupy the chair of eloquence. In 1613, in addition, he became a professor of medicine. He taught medicine for 11 years. He fell ill, prepared for death and made a vow that in the event of a miraculous recovery, he would devote himself to the service of God and theology.

After the onset of recovery, Caspar Bartholin became in 1624 a professor of theology at the University of Copenhagen and a canon of the city ​​of Roskilde .

Scientific Activities

The first among physicians described the work of the olfactory nerve .

His essay Anatomicae Institutiones Corporis Humani , written in 1611 and translated into German, French, English and Hindu languages, has long served as a guide for many universities in the study of anatomy .
