Biography

Born in the family of the leader of the nobility Alexander Mikhailovich Berdyaev and Alexandra Sergeevna, nee Princess Kudasheva . Both he and his brother Nikolai , the future philosopher, basically lived in his Obukhov estate. In 1797, this estate was given to Emperor Paul I by his great-grandfather, General-General, Governor Nikolai Mikhailovich Berdyaev . Part of Obukhovo, owned by the governor, was called Berdyaevka. A castle and a palace were built on it.

He studied at the College of Paul Galagan , then - in St. Petersburg and abroad, receiving the specialty of a doctor.

He wrote in Russian and Ukrainian. He was published in the Russian magazines Observer , Russian Archive and Ukrainian periodicals: the newspapers Delo, Bukovina, Public Opinion, and Rada; Zarya, Literary and Scientific Bulletin magazines, etc.

The Berdyaevs have organized publishing practice since the 1880s. In 1890, the Berdyaev couple founded the literary and scientific journal “By Sea and Land” in Kiev. The magazine was highly appreciated by I. Bunin [2] . However, three years later, authorities closed the journal (after the denunciation of the censorship official, whose name was Athenogen [3] ).

Sergey Berdyaev’s work was hardly studied, since it was oppressed for a long time (in the Soviet period, only one of his poems was published) [3] . At least five hundred of his poetic works were discovered, at least 100 of them were created in Ukrainian. The best of the poems - “At Night,” “To My Sons,” “Towards Ukraine” - reflected feelings for the fate of the people, the development of their culture. In a separate publication, the author released only “Songs to the Organ” (Smolensk, 1908): the book contains only 62 pages, instead of the author’s name it has the pseudonym “Aspid”; all in all, by now his 34 pseudonyms are known.

One of the important aspects of Sergey Berdyaev’s activity was the struggle against anti-Semitism , in particular, against the Kiev branch of the Black-Hundred “ Union of the Russian People ”, headed by D. I. Pikhno .

Berdyaev - author of articles on the works of I. Karpenko-Kary (1900, 1903), N. Lysenko (1903), M. Meterlink (1913); translated poems by I. Franko , I. Makovei , N. Voronoi into Russian and German; I. Surikov , F. Freiligrat - in Ukrainian.
