Biography
Yevgeny Nikolayevich Poltavsky was born on July 28, 1923 in the county town of Vladivostok, Primorsk Province, Far Eastern Region of the RSFSR (now the city, the administrative center of Primorsky Krai of the Russian Federation ) in the family of an employee. Russian . In 1924, the family of Poltava moved to Khabarovsk . Here Evgeny Nikolaevich finished 10 classes of the Khabarovsk secondary railway school No. 5 [1] .
In the ranks of the Workers 'and Peasants' Red Army, E. N. Poltavsky was called up by the Khabarovsk city military registration and enlistment office in March 1942 and sent to the Khabarovsk machine-mortar school. In battles with the Nazi invaders , Lieutenant E.N. Poltavsky from August 1943 as commander of a rifle platoon of the 465th rifle regiment of the 167th rifle division [2] of the 38th Army of the Voronezh Front . He participated in the Belgorod-Kharkov and Sumsk-Priluk operations, crossed the Dnieper , fought on the Lyutezhsky bridgehead . Especially distinguished during the Kiev offensive operation .
On November 3, 1943, units of the 38th Army of the 1st Ukrainian Front [3] launched an offensive on Kiev from the Lyutezhsky bridgehead. The 167th Infantry Division was advancing in the direction of Svyatoshino . When the enemy’s defense was breached near the village of Puscha-Voditsa, Junior Lieutenant E.N. Poltavsky replaced the company commander who had been out of service, then broke into the village and cut an important highway junction, depriving the Germans of the opportunity to transfer reserves to Kiev. For the difference in the Kiev offensive operation, by decree of the Presidium of the Supreme Soviet of the USSR of January 10, 1944, Junior Lieutenant Yevgeny Nikolayevich Poltavsky was awarded the title Hero of the Soviet Union.
In the future, Yevgeny Nikolayevich participated in the Kiev defensive operation and the liberation of Right-Bank Ukraine ( Zhytomyr-Berdichev , Korsun-Shevchenko and Proskurov-Chernivtsi operations) [4] . By the summer of 1944, he had gone from a junior lieutenant to a senior lieutenant and was appointed adjutant to the senior 3rd infantry battalion. In the course of the Lvov-Sandomir and East-Carpathian [5] operations in August-September 1944, Senior Lieutenant Poltava, while directly in the advanced companies, continuously organized reconnaissance and provided command with valuable information. On July 19, 1944, thanks to the initiative of E.N. Poltavsky and skillful organization, the 3rd Rifle Battalion of the 465th Rifle Regiment forced the Strypa River into battle without a loss, and then together with the other battalions of the regiment, the village was liberated. On July 26, 1944, in the battle for the Konyushki [6] settlement, Yevgeny Nikolayevich personally led the reflection of several enemy counterattacks. When on September 14, 1944 in the Carpathians, the battalion was surrounded, at the critical moment of the battle, Senior Lieutenant Poltava raised the fighters to attack. In battle, it was destroyed before the platoon of enemy infantry, and even before the German company was dispersed, after which the battalion left the encirclement and joined the main forces of the regiment.
In the last months of the war, Senior Lieutenant Ye. N. Poltavsky was recalled from the front and sent to refresher courses for officers, which he graduated after victory. After the war, Yevgeny Nikolayevich continued service in the armed forces of the USSR . He served in parts of the Far Eastern and Kiev military districts. In 1974, E. N. Poltavsky retired with the rank of colonel. He lived in the hero-city of Kiev. He died on October 24, 2002. He was buried at the Berkovets cemetery in Kiev.
