Biography
Born into a family of Andalusian Sephardic Jews , who had British citizenship. Formed under the influence of the Spanish folk cante jondo and folk improvisations by Berber musicians of Morocco . He studied music in Barcelona ( 1927 - 1931 ), then in Paris . During the Second World War, he served in the British army in North Africa, settled in Rome in 1944 , became close to composer Alfredo Casella , and began to compose. From 1946 he lived and worked in Paris, organized the group "Zodiac".
Creativity
Rejecting the dogma and excessive intellectualism of the serial technology (first of all, Pierre Boulez ), Ohan, drawing closer to Stravinsky in this, sought a synthesis of the Mediterranean archaic with modern developments in the field of micro-intervals, electro-acoustics, etc. The voice was of particular importance.
Recognition
Ohana is the winner of the Prize Italy ( 1969 ), the National Music Prize of France ( 1975 ), the Arthur Onegger Prize ( 1982 ), the Paris Music Prize ( 1983 ), the Ravel Prize ( 1985 ). In 1994 , at the first award of the Victoire de la Múzic Prize, separately in the field of academic music, Oana's Works for the Ten-String Guitar were recognized as the best composition of the year. Since 1990 - President of the International Academy Maurice Ravel. Awarded the Order of the Legion of Honor .
