Biography

From 1834 to 1839 he studied law in Leiden , received the title of Master of Law and was engaged in advocacy in The Hague . Subsequently, he took up the natural sciences, switched to the study of insects and in 1854 was appointed conservator of the entomological department of the Leiden Museum . In 1845, he helped substantially with the establishment of the Netherlands Entomological Society , whose president was from 1852 until his death. In 1862, the Faculty of Philosophy of the University of Groningen was awarded the title of Honorary Doctor. Although Vollenhofen was equally interested in almost all insect orders, as evidenced by his numerous works, he became especially known for his works on hymenopteran insects. Vollenhofen participated in the publication of the magazines Allgemeene Konst en Letterbode and Tijdschrift vor Entomologie.
