Biography
Born September 26, 1890 in London . His first school was Dulwich College , where he developed an interest in biology and, especially, the butterfly . The entomologist Richard South (1846–1932), who lived near his family’s house, helped him in this. After leaving school, Riley entered Imperial College in order to take an entomology course and where he managed to find work as a demonstrator under the guidance of Ray Lancaster , who was then director of the British Museum. At the age of 21, he was appointed assistant at the Entomology Department, British Museum (Natural History) [1] .
With the outbreak of war in 1914 , Riley joined the Royal Army Service Corps , starting his service in France. At the end of the war, he was fired as a captain and resumed his work in the museum, becoming in 1932 the Head of the Entomology Department of the British Museum , was engaged in the study of insects, mainly butterflies, and was engaged in the procurement of new collections to expand the museum’s funds [1] .
He served as secretary (1926–1928 and 1941–1951) and treasurer (1939–1940) at the Royal Entomological Society of London in 1926–1951, and was elected president in 1952. He was also a member of the Council of the Lepidopterists' Society, and was elected Vice President in 1954 and President in 1958. He was also an active member of the Zoological Society of London . In 1923, after the resignation of Richard Sout , Riley became the editor of Entomologist's monthly monthly magazine Magazine . An active participant in the International Entomological Congresses (he was the executive secretary in 1948) [1] .
