Biography
The representative of the German Moravian noble family of Stöblau from Silesia is the coat of arms of Odrovong.
He studied at the universities of Leipzig and Padua . After which he held various administrative posts in Silesia and the Kingdom of Poland .
He served at the court of the Holy Roman Emperor of the German nation . In 1576-1584 he was in the military and diplomatic service in Spain, Portugal and Austria.
As a mercenary of the Spanish army in 1580, he participated in the Spanish-Portuguese war for the Portuguese inheritance .
A member of the Austrian army’s campaign in Poland in 1587-1588, he was captured by the Polish people, visited Lviv and left notes in his diary.
In 1594, on behalf of Emperor Rudolf II of Habsburg, he visited the Zaporizhzhya Sich in order to attract the Cossacks to the wide anti-Turkish coalition.
He left notes from 1594 describing his trip to Sich, during which he visited Lviv , Lutsk , Brody , Pochaev , Vishnevets , Kamenets , Ploskirova , Pilyava , Priluki, Pogrebishche , Tripolye (now the village of Obukhov district of the Kiev region), Kiev and other settlements of Ukraine (then as part of the Commonwealth ).
Erich Liasot lived for about a month in Zaporozhye ( Bazavlukskaya Sich ). His “Diary” describes everyday details of the life of the Cossacks, their diplomacy, relations with neighbors - Tatars, Turks, Poles, Moldavians. There is also a description of how he was met with the Russian ambassador Vasily Nikiforovich, how negotiations were held with the Cossack foreman about the help of the Cossacks to the German emperor Rudolph II in the war against the Ottoman Empire and so on. Lassota was one of the first to notice the contradictions between the Zaporozhye foreman and ordinary Cossacks.
When visiting Kiev in 1594, Erich Lyasota describes the tomb of the "giant Ilya Morovlin " in St. Sophia Cathedral . F. Brun identifies Ilya Morovlin with the hero Ilya Muromets, but suggests that the burial of Morovlin \ Muromets in St. Sophia Cathedral did not exist at the time of Lyasota, since his remains were transferred to the Kiev Pechersk Lavra in more ancient times [2] [3] .
The Diary covers the period 1573-1594. It was published in German in 1854 and 1866 in the city of Halle (Saxony-Anhalt) under the title "The Diary of Erich Lassota von Steblau."
