Secnidazole is an antimicrobial and antiprotozoal agent derived from 5-nitroimidazole. Structurally similar to metronidazole . It has a bactericidal effect on most anaerobic bacteria and many simple organisms, including Trichomonas.

It is used to treat trichomoniasis , intestinal and liver amoebiasis , and giardiasis .

Pharmacological properties
Interacts with the DNA of microbial cells, disrupting its spiralization and causing rupture of its filaments; inhibits the synthesis of nucleic acids; inhibits the recovery processes characteristic of anaerobes .
After oral administration, it is well absorbed, the bioavailability of the drug is about 80%. The maximum concentration of the drug is created after 4 hours. It is biotransformed in the liver. It is excreted slowly ( elimination half-life - about 20 hours), mainly with urine.
Contraindications
Allergy, including to other imidazole derivatives, pathological changes in the blood formula, organic diseases of the central nervous system in the active stage. The drug passes through the placental barrier and is secreted into breast milk, so it is contraindicated during pregnancy and lactation.
