The League of Patriots ( French la Ligue des patriotes ) - the most famous French league ; the first mass party organized in France . It was founded on May 18, 1882 with the approval of Leon Gambetta by the poet Paul Deruloud and the historian Henri Martin to promote the idea of revenge for the Germans and the return of Alsace-Lorraine ; set the goal of “developing the physical and moral forces of the nation”, primarily in the interests of a victorious war against Germany .
Initially composed of moderate Republicans (like Victor Hugo ), the league, after multiple divisions and the efforts of Deruloud, began to support General Boulanger , inciting him to a coup d'etat . In the mid 1880s totaled over 180 thousand members. Dissolved in March 1889 , the league was revived in 1897 in the wake of militarism and patriotism , conquered Paris again among the anti-Dreyfusars , but quickly degenerated into an organization opposite the parliamentary republic - the ultra-right, anti-Semitic and anti-German.
