Biography
Since 1937 he studied at the ballet school at the Royal Ballet of Denmark , was fully raised using the Bournonville technique . He made his debut in 1946 as Adonis in the Harald Lander ballet Thorvaldsen . Since 1949 - a soloist. The formation of Brun as a dancer was greatly influenced by the lessons of Vera Volkova .
In 1949, he was admitted to the troupe of the American Ballet Theater , where he performed for 9 years. In 1955, he danced in the ballet " Giselle " in tandem with Alicia Markova . Often performed in a duet with Carla Fracci , in 1969 the film-ballet Giselle was shot, which captured this duet on film. His roles in the performances of La Sylphide , Giselle , and Swan Lake are best known.
Headed the Royal Ballet of Sweden in 1967-1973 and the National Ballet of Canada in 1983-1986.
It is considered in the West as one of the most significant ballet dancers of the 20th century. Since 1988, in memory of the artist, an annual international competition for the “Eric Brunn Prize” has been held in Toronto - money for the prize fund was allocated from his condition according to his will.
Personal life
In 1961, Brun met the dancer Rudolf Nureyev after he fled from the USSR. Nureyev was a big fan of Brun, having previously seen recorded performances with his participation in a tour of the USSR with the American Ballet Theater. Brun and Nureyev became a couple and maintained relations for 25 years, until the death of Brun [1] [2] .
Death
Brun died at the on April 1, 1986, at the age of 57. The cause of death was lung cancer [3] . However, according to the writer Pierre-Henri Verlhak, Brun could also have died from AIDS [4] . He is buried in an anonymous grave at the Marieberg cemetery in Gentoft , a suburb of Copenhagen, where he spent his childhood.
