From 1946 he studied at the Vienna Academy of Music in the clarinet class of Leopold Vlach , then studied conducting there under the guidance of Hans Swarovski . Initially, he didn’t leave his performing career, and from 1956 he even began teaching the clarinet in his alma mater, but then he concentrated on conducting and especially on teaching conducting: in 1964 he headed the Academy orchestra, since 1969 extraordinary, in 1973 - 1992 yy ordinary professor. Among the students of Esterraicher were Dmitry Kitaenko , Carlos Kalmar , Ali Rahbari , Luis Antonio Garcia Navarro , Agnes Grossman , Bela Drahosh , Balazh Kochar , Fabio Mastrangelo , Ivan and Adam Fisher and others; it is reported that the initial course of conducting was with him and Placido Domingo [2] . Outside the academy he acted as a conductor quite rarely, but for a number of years he was a guest conductor of the Symphony Orchestra of the Leningrad Philharmonic and the Kyushu Symphony Orchestra , and also worked with the Vienna Radio Symphony Orchestra .
