Biography
In his youth, he studied botany and studied the flora of Australia and China, and subsequently began to study the biology, morphology and systematics of various orders of insects, especially the retina, one of the best experts on which he was considered. For the Trichoptera order, McLachlan first applied morphological characters to the classification of these insects, resulting in his classic monograph on this order. Among McLachlan's many scientific works, the following are the most important: "Monograph of the British Species of Caddisflies" (1865-1867); "Monograph of the British Neuroptera Planipennia" (1868); "Monograph of the British Psocidae" (1866-1867); The Catalog of British Neuroptera (1870); Quelques espèces de phryganides (1872); "Monographic Revision and Synopsis of the Trichoptera of the European Fauna" (with 59 tab. Depicting the morphological details of European caddis flies, 1874-1880); "Neuroptera" (on Fedchenko's journey) and many others.
