Biography

Born in the village of Dmitrievo, Syzran district, Simbirsk province in a noble family of an official. In 1864 he graduated from the Simbirsk Gymnasium and in 1865 entered the Physics and Mathematics Department of Kazan University , but in October 1866 he was expelled for non-payment of tuition. He moved to Moscow and entered the Petrovsky Agricultural and Forestry Academy , but in August 1868 he moved to the natural department of the Physics and Mathematics Faculty of Moscow University , which he graduated with a candidate ’s degree in 1872 . In November 1872 he became a freelance assistant laboratory assistant at the newly created University Agronomy Laboratory (since December 1897 he was in charge of the laboratory); worked under the guidance of N. E. Lyaskovsky . Since April 1890, Sabanin, as a private assistant professor, began lecturing on agronomy and livestock farming .

In 1895, the Soil and Climatological Commission was established at the Imperial Moscow Society of Agriculture, whose chairman A. N. Sabanin was elected, and when the commission was divided into soil and climatological, he was the first chairman.

In November 1901, after defending his dissertation “On Silica in Millet Grain (Pannicum miliaceum),” he received a master 's degree in agronomy. Since July 1902, he served as an extraordinary professor . At this time, in 1904, a special two-story building for soil and agrochemical laboratories was built at Moscow University, in which the university's soil museum was also opened. In 1916-1920, he served as an ordinary professor at the Department of Agronomy of the Physics and Mathematics Faculty of Moscow University. Honored Professor of Moscow University since 1915.

Research

A. N. Sabanin paid much attention to the agrochemical direction. Among the factors of soil formation, the biological factor was considered the most important - living organisms, especially plants. In contrast to V.V. Dokuchaev, he did not consider relief and climate as factors in soil formation and therefore rejected the classification of soils according to the climatological principle. Although he could not build his classification based on the types of vegetation.

Sabanin also investigated the absorption capacity of soils, identifying three types: chemical absorption, physical and physico-chemical, i.e. absorption by colloids (later his idea was developed by K. K. Gedroits ).

Bibliography

Together with Professor N. E. Lyaskovsky, he published in Landw.-Versuchs-Stat. ( 1875 ): “Ueber den Einfluss des Lichtes auf die Bildung von Spaltungs-Producten der Eiweis Substanzen bei der Keimung des Küürbis”; in "Landw.
