History
It was founded in late 1993 at the initiative of Maxim Osipov , a cardiologist , who became interested in book publishing after the publication of his book “Clinical Echocardiography” at the Mir Publishing House [1] [2] [3] . In addition to Osipov, the founders of the publishing house were cardiologist Vladimir Anatolyevich Ananich, editor-in-chief of the biological editorial office of the Mir publishing house Marina Dmitrievna Grozdova, financier Bernard Sacher and others [ specify ] . From the very beginning, the publishing house has focused on the translation and publication of Western European and American medical manuals. The first book to be published was a practical guide to treating myocardial infarction (1994), and the first book to be widely known was The Therapeutic Directory of the University of Washington (1995), which sold 110,000 copies [4] [5] .

The first director of the publishing house was Roman Mikhailovich Kachalov (1993-1995), the second - Maxim Alexandrovich Osipov (1995-2010), since 2010 the publishing house has been headed by Vladimir Anatolyevich Ananich.
For a long time, the editor-in-chief of the publishing house was Dmitry Vadimovich Samoilov (01/29/1958 - 09/08/2005) [6] .
Series and Publications
In the series “Foreign Practical Guides in Medicine” the “Therapeutic Guide of the University of Washington” (1995) was published; as of 2013 there were a total of 14 editions of the guide. This series includes books with a pronounced practical orientation and highly structured text. Ten books of this series were included in the Electronic Medical Library, which was published by Praktika in 2000, thus becoming the first medical publishing house in Russia to sell books in electronic form [7] .
The series “Color atlases-reference books” contains publications richly illustrated with color photographs; the series began with the publication of the books “Symptoms of Internal Diseases” by M. Zaturoff (1997) and “Infectious Diseases” by R. Emond, H. Rowland and F. Wellsby (1998 ) The most significant books in the series are Dermatology by Thomas Fitzpatrick (two Russian editions of 1999 and 2007) and Hereditary Syndromes by David Smith (2011).
The Classic of Modern Medicine series includes translations of repeatedly reprinted and supplemented deep classical guides, such as Internal Medicine according to Tinsley R. In the series “100 Questions for the Doctor”, popular books for patients are published. In the series “Sports Medicine”, a guide on sports injury, an atlas of sports dressings (complete with a training video) and the fundamental “Olympic Guide to Sports Medicine” have been published. Since 2010, the series “Contemporary Russian Medicine” and “Classics of Russian Medicine” have been opened, where books by Russian authors are published (before that, the publishing house published only translated medical literature).
In addition to medical books, the publishing house has published books on psychology and psychotherapy ( Jaspers and Jung ), music ( "Grove's Music Dictionary" , the encyclopedic dictionary "Music of the 20th Century" by Levon Akopyan ) [8] [9] and religion (works of Metropolitan Anthony of Sourozh ), also publishes fiction and journalistic literature.
