Born in 1861 . From 1881 he studied natural sciences, first at the Stuttgart Polytechnic and then at Tübingen . In 1885, he received a Ph.D. degree ; first served as an assistant in various offices. From 1893 he began to give lectures on zoology, embryology and histology at the Polytechnic Institute, in 1898 he was appointed professor at the same institute. For three years, he visited the zoological station in Naples , where he began processing the Hyperiidea ( Amphipoda ) unit of the Bay of Naples on behalf of the station. In addition, he made four trips to Algeria and Tunisia to study the biology and adaptation phenomena of desert animals, mostly orthopteranes , as well as their geographical distribution.
