Qualification

16 teams took part in the men's soccer tournament at the 2012 Summer Olympics . Competitions began on July 26 and took place in 6 cities of Great Britain : London , Glasgow , Cardiff , Coventry , Manchester and Newcastle . The finals of the football championship were played on August 11 at Wembley Stadium . For the first time since the 1960 Olympics in Rome, one of the tournament participants was the British Olympic team .

The men's soccer tournament is the only discipline at the London Olympics in which there was a traditional restriction on the maximum age of participants. Each team could declare only 3 players who were born before January 1, 1989 .

5-time world football champions Brazilians once again missed the opportunity to win the first Olympic gold, losing to the Mexicans in the final.
