Warcraft III World Editor

Warcraft III World Editor is the official level editor for the Blizzard Entertainment series of Warcraft III games. It is similar to the StarEdit editor that came with StarCraft , but the World Editor is more powerful and functional than its predecessor. As with the StarCraft editor, Blizzard does not support the editor and does not answer questions and problems associated with it.

Features

World Editor lets you create and edit maps for Warcraft III: Reign of Chaos and The Frozen Throne games. By default, the map is saved in the version for Reign of Chaos, and it can be launched in both games. However, when the resources of The Frozen Throne add-on are required, the version for the add-on is saved, in which case the card can only be opened in the add-on.

Compared to the StarCraft level editor, the World Editor has great capabilities, for example, it supports various camera panning during the game, includes a lot more editable parameters for units, decorations, objects and other things, and allows you to import sound and image files into the map, as well as three-dimensional models.

The editor is divided into 8 modules, each of which performs its own functions:

Initial trigger for Melee cards in the Trigger Editor (GUI).
  • Terrain Editor - allows you to change the terrain and scenery, add and manage units, areas and cameras. Each of these components is designed for its own purposes: for example, terrain, scenery and units are designed to create a visual component of the map, cameras allow you to create an animated game scene, and areas are needed to control the course of the script, as well as to create effects on a certain area (like rain or rays of light). To work with the module, it has a small toolbar.
  • The trigger editor is a simplified editor of the JASS language. Instead of text code, triggers are used here, each of which is designed to execute some part of the map script. Each trigger consists of an event, condition, and action.
  • Sound Editor - a module for working with sound. Allows you to manage sound variables, import and export sound files, change the volume. However, it does not support editing audio files directly.
  • Object Editor - contains most of the objects of the game (in particular, units, their abilities, decorations and spells) and allows you to change many of their parameters. In the editor's version for Reign of Chaos, he had only the β€œTroops” tab, however, in addition to it, 6 more tabs were added (items, destructible objects, decorations, spells \ effects, abilities, improvements).
  • Campaign Editor - allows you to combine multiple maps into one campaign. The format of the created campaign is similar to the single player campaign: you can set a background image for it, there are chapters in it, and achievements of one chapter can go to another. The campaign can only be played in The Frozen Throne add-on, as the single-player section "Extra campaigns" has appeared in it, where you can install campaigns created by other users.
  • AI Editor - Artificial Intelligence Editor. Allows you to set some parameters of AI: the degree of pumping heroes, the order of development of the base, attack options and others.
  • Object manager - in one window contains both general information about the map and information from other modules.
  • Import Manager - allows you to import files into the map, which can later be used in any module.

Despite the many features, the editor also has drawbacks, to supplement which card-makers use third-party utilities. Some functions that they can perform:

  • Create and edit files that cannot be edited in the editor. In particular, these include sound, graphics (textures) and three-dimensional models.
  • Map optimization (reduction in size or download speed).
  • Protection of the card against opening.
  • Writing code in JASS , without using the trigger editor.
  • Work directly with the map file without an editor.
