History

The order was founded by the King of France Louis XIV in 1693 in honor of his ancestor Louis IX , ranked as a saint, as a military and civilian reward for Catholics. The Order belonged to the Knights' Orders and was divided into three classes - the Grand Cross, the Commander-Commander and the Cavalier - and was awarded for seniority in the service of the crown - at least twenty-eight years.

Initially, there were no more than 8 cavaliers of the Grand Cross, later their number increased to 40. The number of commanders was initially limited to 24, and eventually increased to 80. The number of cavaliers was never limited. In 1759, King Louis XV confirmed the statute of the Order of St. Louis and founded a similar order for officers of the French army, Protestants by religion, - Military Order of Merit . He could not be worn with the order of St. Louis.

The Royal Military Order of St. Louis and the Military Order of Merit were abolished in 1789 and reinstated in 1816 by King Louis XVIII . The order became inactive in 1830, when King Charles X retired into exile. De jure as a dynastic order, he was inherited by the Orleans dynasty , de facto awards were not made.

Signs of the Order

The badge of the Order of St. Louis is a golden Maltese cross with balls on the ends, with a border of white enamel with gold lilies between the ends of the cross. In the center is an oval medallion of red enamel with a golden figure of St. Louis in the royal mantle with a laurel wreath in his right hand and a crown of thorns in his left. The medallion is surrounded by a strip of blue enamel with the inscription “LUDOVICUS MAGNUS INSTITUIT 1693”. On the reverse of the cross there is the same medallion with a fire sword and a laurel wreath, and around the circumference there is the motto of the order - “BELL [ICAE] VIRTUTIS PRAEM [IUM]” (award of military courage).

The star of the order is silver sewn, which is an enlarged sign of the order, but the medallion in the center is round.

The ribbon of the order is raspberry.
