The airport is located 27 km from Murcia near the coast of Mar Menor , a major tourist center of Europe. In 1995, the passenger turnover was only 88,608 people. Popularity among tourists forced to reconstruct the runway , which allowed the acceptance of such aircraft as the Boeing 757 or Airbus A300 . By 2009, passenger traffic increased to 1,630,684.
