The airport is located 27 km from Murcia near the coast of Mar Menor , a major tourist center of Europe. In 1995, the passenger turnover was only 88,608 people. Popularity among tourists forced to reconstruct the runway , which allowed the acceptance of such aircraft as the Boeing 757 or Airbus A300 . By 2009, passenger traffic increased to 1,630,684. [1] In 2011, the second runway was commissioned. The airport is operated by Aena .
The airport serves both domestic and international flights, scheduled and charter . The construction of a new international airport is also ongoing in the suburbs of Murcia. [2]
Near the airport there is a 800 m long strip for aircraft of a military base .
