The party was founded on September 29, 1963 in Tizi-Ouzu as an opposition to the Ben Bell government. After the creation of the party, many cities of Kabilia supported the party, but it was soon banned - until 1990. Nevertheless, it continued to boycott the elections of 2002, 2007 and 2009. Before the 2012 elections, she negotiated with the Trotskyist Workers Party , but in the end she took part on her own and became the second most representative opposition force (27 deputies).
