Biography
Born in the family of an employee. In 1958 he graduated from MGIMO of the USSR Ministry of Foreign Affairs. In 1960, for nine months he served in the Navy in Vladivostok . In 1958-1960 he worked as a researcher at the Institute of Asian Peoples . From 1962 to 1969, B. B. Parnikel headed the editorial department of the journal " Peoples of Asia and Africa ." In 1967 he became secretary, and in 1971, chairman of the “ Malay-Indonesian Readings ” ( Institute of Asian and African Countries at Moscow State University named after MV Lomonosov, Moscow Branch of the USSR Civil Defense ) [1] . Since 1969 he worked at the Institute of World Literature of the Academy of Sciences of the USSR . In 1973 he defended his thesis for the degree of candidate of philological sciences "On the issue of the roots of Malay-speaking literature and its place in the circle of literature of the Indonesian archipelago." In 1990, B. B. Parnikel created and until 2004 headed the Nusantara Society . In 1991, he was awarded a doctorate for the monograph “Regional artistic traditions and foreign cultural influence in the development of literature of the Indonesian archipelago and the Malay Peninsula (IX-XIX centuries)” [2] .
Scientific activity
By his work, Parnikel B. B. created a new scientific direction - Malay literary criticism and laid the foundations for a comparative study of the literature and folklore of Nusantara (Malay island world) [3] . A great merit of the scientist is the translation into Russian and the publication of the monument of classical Malay literature " The Tale of Hang Tuah " [4] .
B. B. Parnikel was well known abroad [5] . He was a representative of Russia in the editorial board of the journal Indonesia and the Malay World (Indonesia and the Malay World, London), Excerpta Indonesica (Leiden), a corresponding member of the Royal Institute of Linguistics, Regional Studies and Ethnology (Netherlands), a guest writer for the Council for the language and literature of Malaysia ( Kuala Lumpur , 1990/1991), a visiting professor at the University of Malaya (Malaysia, 1996/1997) and an associate professor at the University of Natural Sciences (Penang, Malaysia, 1998/2000). Parnickel B. B. - The author of about 200 works, including in Malaysian and English [6] .
