Biography
Born April 28, 1875 in the family of Prince Leopold of Bavaria and his wife, the Austrian Archduke Gisela , the eldest daughter of Emperor Franz Joseph I and Empress Elizabeth of Bavaria . Named after her grandmother by father Augusta Ferdinand of Austria .
On November 15, 1893, in Munich, the princess married Archduke Joseph Augustus of Austria , son of Joseph Karl Ludwig of Austria and Princess Clotilde of Saxe-Coburg-Gotha . Maternally was the great-grandson of the French king Louis Philippe . Six children were born in the marriage:
- Archduke Joseph Franz (1895-1957)
- Archduke Gisela Augustus (1897-1901)
- Archduke Sofia Clementine (1899-1978)
- Archduke Ladislas Luitpold (1901-1946)
- Archduke Matthias Joseph (1904-1905)
- Archduke Magdalena Maria (1909-2000) - was engaged in painting.
During the First World War, the princess devoted herself to helping the wounded, provided all kinds of financial assistance to the troops. After the war, she was the chairman of various charitable organizations.
During World War II, the family fled to the United States. After the war they returned to Germany, where Augusta died in 1964 at the age of 89.
