Biography
Born in 1823. He studied medicine and natural sciences, was a doctor in Leipzig , Würzburg and Freiburg , then a conservator at the Comparative Anatomical Museum in Oxford, in 1853 he became a professor of comparative anatomy and the director of the zoootomic collection in Leipzig. In 1873 and 1874, he replaced Wyville Thomson ( en: Charles Wyville Thomson ) as a professor of zoology in Edinburgh .

Together with Wilhelm Engelman He published Bibliotheca zoologica, devoted to the review of zoological literature, since 1878 - Zoologischer Anzeiger - a complete review of current zoological literature with the addition of short articles on various branches of zoology. Carus translated many works of Darwin and some of Lewis into German.
