Biography

Since 1869 he studied natural sciences, mainly zoology and botany in Rostock and Leipzig , in 1873 he was a doctor of philosophy in Leipzig. From 1873 to 1876 he was an assistant with Karl Mobius , and from 1877 to 1879 he was a assistant professor at Kiel University , from 1879 to 1891 he was a teacher of natural sciences at the Higher Real School in Oldenburg. In 1892 he received the title of professor and was invited by the Prussian government to Heligoland as the head of the biological station newly established on this island. At the same time, Heinke was appointed a member of the commission for the study of the German seas. Since 1886, Heinke has been participating in the work of the German Fisheries Society and since 1901 has been a member of the scientific commission for the international study of the seas. From 1887 to 1892, Heinke made expeditions in the German and Baltic Seas, and, incidentally, collected valuable data on the natural history of herring.
