The Bavarian Dictionary ( German: Bayerisches Wörterbuch ) is a large Bavarian dialectological dictionary , the project of which belongs to the Bavarian Academy of Sciences . The dictionary is a collection of the modern lexical fund of the (Bavarian) dialects of Bavaria and historical dialectisms, dating back to the language of the ancient Bavarians and the Old and Middle High German period . The research is based on the first monumental works of Schmeler and Massmann , devoted to the vocabulary of the Bavarian dialect, and considered the first major studies in this area.
The Commission on Dialectology was founded in 1911 at the Academy in Munich , to which the Vienna Academy of Sciences joined. In 1913 - 1933, questionnaire studies were carried out, which were interrupted due to the war . Once again, work began to boil in 1946 under the leadership of Otto Bazler. In 1961, Vienna and Munich continued to work separately, each on its own dictionary. The Vienna project was oriented towards the Bavarian dialects in Austria . New polls were conducted in the 1980s , and in 1995 a dictionary began to be published. The full completion of the dictionary is planned by 2070 , when all ten volumes will be ready.
The dictionary card file currently has three million extracts from the literature and collections of profiles.
