Description
The plot of the game is based on the Disney animated series " Duck Tales " of the same name. It was first released in the United States for NES on 09/14/1989, and later transferred to Gameboy .
Along with the series, Megaman is one of the most successful work of the Japanese studio Capcom in the 1980s - 1990s.
In “Duck Tales” there are a lot of similarities with the Megaman series: vivid graphics, precise control with peculiar dynamics - Scrooge uses his cane as a weapon, tool and for jumping.
Story
In the game, the player controls the drake Scrooge McDuck dressed in a black top hat , jacket and gait , with a cane and pince-nez.
Scrooge McDuck is driven by a thirst to take possession of treasures and become the richest drake in the world.
The plot of the game does not directly follow the plot lines of the animated series, however, both in the game and in the cartoon Scrooge McDuck travels to different corners of the planet in order to find long-lost treasures. Based on Scrooge's love of travel, the creators added a lot of secondary characters from the animated series to the game - such as Zigzag McKryak , Vint Razboltaylo (found at the bonus level), Utkorobot (will help Scrooge get into the cheese bunker on the Moon), Mrs. Cluvdia (gives Scrooge additional bonuses), the prehistoric duck Babba (he can be saved at the Himalaya level), Ponochka , as well as Scrooge’s nephews: Billy, Willy and Dilly (like Ponochka, they help Scrooge by giving tips on how to complete the level). The enemies at the levels are the Gavs brothers , Magica de'Hypnosis , as well as the egocentric billionaire Flinthard Glomgold , who is the main opponent of Scrooge and the main antagonist. The gameplay of the game dynamically combines jumping, climbing and lowering the ropes, exploring the terrain and solving simple puzzles. Scrooge's main weapon is his cane ( English pogo stick), bouncing on which, he can climb higher, kill enemies and smash some stones.
Levels
Duck stories consist of 5 levels that can be passed in random order. In each level, the treasure is guarded by the next monster - the boss.
- African mines . Treasure - A giant diamond of the earth's interior. Boss - King of Terrafirmia.
- Amazon Treasure - Scepter of the Inca King. Boss - Living Statue .
- The Himalayas . Treasure - Genghis Khan's Lost Crown. Boss - Bigfoot .
- The moon . Treasure - Green cheese of longevity. Boss - Rat Mutant.
- Transylvania . Treasure - Coin of the Lost Kingdom. Boss - Magica de'Hypnosis.
There are also 2 secret treasures - a golden ring in the African mines and a golden mirror on the moon. At the end of all levels, Scrooge is again in Transylvania to fight with the final boss - Count Crack Dracula. There are three endings in the game: normal, good (you need to collect 2 secret treasures and at least $ 10 million) and bad (finish the game bankrupt). But a bad ending is the most difficult.
- Little yellow diamond - adds $ 1,000.
- Big yellow diamond - adds $ 10,000.
- Big red diamond - adds $ 50,000.
- The letter "M" is temporary invulnerability.
- Ice cream: adds 1 point of life.
- Big ice cream: completely replenishes the health scale
- Spark: Adds 1 life point (secret).
- Scrooge McDuck Doll: Extra Life.
Prototype
There is a beta version of the game. Its differences:
- Different level names: Jungle = The Amazon, Ghost House = Transylvania, Underground = African Mines, Snow Mountain = The Himalayas, Moon Surface = The Moon.
- Burgers, and not ice cream, fall out of the defeated enemies as a replenishment of energy.
- It’s impossible to take damage from the Brothers Gavs.
- Other music sounds in Round 2 of the Castle Crack of Dracula.
- The cost of treasures is much less. For example, after defeating the boss, they give not $ 1,000,000, but only $ 10,000.
- There is a “Continue” item in the main menu.
- Other alien sprites at “The Moon” level. Fat aliens are replaced by snake-like creatures resembling hydralisks from StarCraft .
- A completely different text in the ending and dialogs. Dialogues in the prototype are not meaningful; in all likelihood, the text was quickly inserted into the game to assess the possibilities, or translated from Japanese. In the final, Scrooge tells his nephews that although he became richer, he also acquired something more valuable - "dreams and friendship" ( English dream and friendship). In the final version, nephews congratulate him on the accumulated wealth, and Scrooge replies that this is so, "now he is the richest drake in the world."
Duck Tales: Remastered
In August 2013, Capcom Studios, together with WayForward Studios, released a remaster of the original game for PC and Playstation 3 , Xbox 360 and WiiU game consoles. In addition to the updated graphics, the developers transferred a lot of small details from the original to the game, reworking and expanding the levels in places. The complexity of the game was also noticeably changed - in Duck Tales on NES the three difficulty levels did not have any significant differences between themselves, except that in the lighter version the number of health columns was increased (6 instead of 3 standard). In the remake on Easy difficulty, unlimited attempts are given, and on Normal and Hard - only two that are very easy to lose. In addition, an additional "secret" complexity was added - Extreme. Two new levels were also added that were not in the original game: the introductory one is the Scrooge McDuck money vault, and the final one is in the vent of the Vesuvius volcano, where Magica de Hypnosis lives in the story. The scoring of Scrooge McDuck in the game was taken up by Alan Young , the British dubbing actor of the original animated series. June Forey , also from the original squad, was invited to the role of Magica.
The game received mixed, but generally positive reviews from critics and the press. The average rating is 75%. Reviewers liked the updated levels and overall concept, but they noted "a large number of dialogs" and "poor management." A critic with GameSpot called the game "a boring platformer that does not bring any pleasure" and put 4.5 out of 10, for which he was strongly dissatisfied with readers. The players took the remake very positively.
The game did not come out on media, and its creators report that they do not have this in their plans. The PS3 version was released in the box, but inside the box there was only a coupon for downloading to the Playstation Network. Journalists received an original collector's edition before the release: a small case full of shredded dollars, inside which was a gilded cartridge with a game for NES, a remake, as well as a coupon for Green Longevity Cheese, and several other additional materials.
