Background

The first boxing championship of the Russian Empire took place in 1914 (4 participants, all from St. Petersburg). Before the revolution, 2 more championships took place - 1915 and 1916. [1] [2] .

History

In the early years of Soviet power, boxing was banned. Even after its withdrawal, on the initiative of the People's Commissar A. V. Lunacharsky , there were long discussions about the admissibility of knockout . Although boxing was among the disciplines taught at Vsevobuch courses to future sports instructors, until 1920 there were no boxing competitions. Boxers P. Nikiforov , A. Kharlampiev and V. Samoilov , who worked in pre-revolutionary times, worked as teachers in Moscow. The first competitions were held in Moscow on the days of the pre-Olympic holiday (July 1920), but only a few people entered the ring, including the aforementioned P. Nikiforov, the format of the fights was in the nature of demonstrations [3] .

Since 1936 (intermittently) fights were held for the title of absolute champion of the USSR, played out in fights of 6 rounds of 3 minutes.

In 1956, 1959, 1963, 1967, 1971, 1975, 1979, 1983, the country's boxing championships became an integral part of the final competitions of the Spartakiad of the peoples of the USSR .

The last championship of the defunct USSR (CIS Championship) was held in 1992.
