Biography

He received his primary education from the Jesuits , who, noting the ability, sent him to Aricci College in Brescia . His college mate was the future Pope John XXIII . After college, he entered the University of Milan at the Faculty of Engineering, but then switched to philosophy and theology .

He was ordained a priest on May 30, 1931, after which he was appointed to the Shkodra diocese . In 1936 he headed the diocese. During his tenure, he opened a cathedral school and began publishing a weekly Catholic newspaper. At the same time he wrote operas, becoming the founder of the genre in Albania [2] .

Since 1945, he spent 38 years in prison by the sentence of the communist regime of Albania. He was blamed for listening to foreign radio stations. After imprisonment, he became one of the high-ranking Catholic priests, at the age of 92 he became a member of the College of Cardinals : Pope John Paul II in 1994 made him Cardinal Deacon of the Onyissanti in Via Appia Nuova . He was the first cardinal of the Albanians and the oldest of three dozen Catholic priests who survived the persecution by the communist authorities [2] .
