History
The Tripoli diocese was established by the patriarchal and synodal decree of the Alexandrian Orthodox Church in 1866 [1] .
On November 27, 1958, the Tripoli metropolis was abolished, and its territory was annexed to the Carthage Metropolis [2]
On October 27, 2004, by the decision of the Holy Synod, the Tripoli metropolis was again restored within the borders of Libya , as well as the Matruh governorate in Egypt with the title “Metropolitan of Tripoli, Iertim and Exarch of Libya” [3] .
Since the summer of 2011, in connection with the beginning of the " Arab Spring ", the church of St. the great martyr George, who is the cathedral of the Tripoli metropolis, is repeatedly attacked by extremists [4] .
