History

The temple was built in the first half of the XII century as a three-nave basilica in the Romanesque style . Initially, the church was consecrated in honor of St. Thomas the Apostle , in 1254 received a new patron, St. John the Baptist . During the 12th — 15th centuries, it was repeatedly expanded and rebuilt, which added Gothic parts to the Romanesque core of the temple. The Gothic presbytery of the modern church dates from the XIV century, the main nave - XV century. In 1623, the 76-meter-high bell tower was built, which was later destroyed by lightning. At the end of the 18th century, a modern 57-meter-high bell tower was erected to replace the destroyed one. In the 18th century, several baroque side chapels were built in the church .

In 1857, the department of bishops of Lavant was transferred to Maribor by Bishop Slomshekom , after which the Church of Sts. John the Baptist received the status of the cathedral.

In 1996, the remains of Bishop Slomshek canonized were transferred to the chapel of the Holy Cross.
