Biography

He received a bachelor's degree in physics from the University of Chicago and a Ph.D. from the California Institute of Technology .

In 1935-1938 he worked as an instructor at Princeton University , in 1938-1941 - at the University of Pennsylvania .

In 1941 he became the deputy director of the radiation laboratory Massachusetts Institute of Technology , where he worked until 1946. Thanks to his efforts, the radar turned from a primitive device into a powerful tool widely used in military affairs.

Together with I. Götting led the team to create the radar SCR-584 .

In 1946, Ridenour returned to the University of Pennsylvania , and in 1947 he became dean of the graduate department of the University of Illinois . Over the next three years of work as a dean, he organized a laboratory of control systems, a laboratory of digital computers, a laboratory of radiocarbon analysis, a microbiological group and a group on solid-state physics [1] .

First Chief Specialist for Science, USAF [2] .

In the 1950s, he served in the Scientific Advisory Committee of the ballistic research laboratory of the site in Aberdeen [3] .

In 1955-1959 he worked in the company "Lockheed".

Chairman of the Bureau of Scientific Security in the field of electronics and data processing (Scientific Advisory Board Panel on Electronics and Data Processing) of the National Security Agency from January 27, 1959 until his death in May of the same year.

In 1960, the Air Force Association awarded him the Theodore von Karman Award [4] .

He died of cerebral hemorrhage at the age of 47 [5] .

Major Achievements

Developed aviatson microwave radar, which allowed to carry out bombardment through the clouds [6] .

Together with Gilbert W. King, Edwin L. Hughes, and George Brown, George W. Brown patented a data storage system that combined a high-capacity single-recordable optical disc and a small-capacity magnetic drum. Once a month, the changed data from the magnetic drum was archived on the optical disk.
