Augustova road ( Latin Via Augusta , other names: Via Herculea and Via Exterior ) is one of the Roman roads on the east coast of the Iberian Peninsula , the longest (1,500 km) in Roman Spain . The Augustow road was a continuation of the Domitian road from Rome to Cadiz in the south of modern Spain and ran along the Balearic Sea .
The Augustow road connected the following cities: Hades ( Cadiz ), New Carthage ( Cartagena ), Valentia ( Valencia ), Sagunt ( Sagunto ), Tarracon ( Tarragona ), Barsino ( Barcelona ), Gerund ( Girona ). In the city of Martorel, the road crosses the Llobregat River along the Devil's Bridge , which was built in the Middle Ages on the foundation of an ancient Roman bridge.
Previously called Via Herculea or Via Heraclea ( Hercules Road), Hannibal Road and Vía Exterior , but was renamed in honor of Octavian Augustus thanks to the expansion and improvements made during the reign of Augustus. Especially in the years from 8 to 2 year BC. e. The Augustow Road has become the main transport and commercial axis between the Roman provinces, cities and ports on the Mediterranean Sea.
