History

On the territory of modern Buryatia, before the inclusion of Transbaikalia in the Russian state , the East Buryat ( Khorintsy ), Tungus and Mongol tribes lived. The birthplace of Temujin ( Genghis Khan ), as well as the alleged burial site, is located between Lake Baikal and the Onon River , a tributary of the Amur . By the 19th century, part of the Western Buryats living west of Lake Baikal moved to the eastern coast, in Transbaikalia , displacing Evenks and the Khalkha-Mongols .

In the republic, in accordance with the current regulatory legal acts, the Buryat language can be studied voluntarily. According to statistics from the Ministry of Education and Science of the Republic, in 2016, slightly more than half of 132 thousand students chose Buryat as the state or native language.
