History
The first records of the settlement of Nida (Nidden) in the chronicles of the Teutonic Order belong to the years 1429 and 1497 , but the then Nida was located two kilometers south of the present settlement. Due to the threat of wandering dunes in 1784, the village was moved to its current location.
In 1874, the Nida lighthouse was built on the dune of Urbas . It was later destroyed by German troops, but after World War II was restored by the Soviet authorities. According to the Versailles Peace Treaty ( 1919 ), the northern part of the Curonian Spit in 1920 was transferred to the jurisdiction of the Entente together with the Klaipeda region. In 1923, these territories were annexed by Lithuania. In 1939, they were returned to Germany , and after World War II they became part of the Lithuanian SSR . Nida and other villages in the Lithuanian half of Spit ( Juodkrante , Preila and Pervalka ) were merged into the city of Neringa, this was done to simplify the administrative management of the villages, which, being located at a distance of kilometers from each other, never formed a single city.
Attractions
In 2000 , the Curonian Spit was inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List as one of the most beautiful and unique landscapes in Europe .
