miscellaneathe last representative of the Yagan people, also the only native Yagan speaker

In 1946, at least 60 people spoke Yagan [1] . But by the beginning of the XXI century, in Chile, and possibly all over the world, there were only three native speakers of the Yagan language - Cristina Calderon, her sister Ursula Calderón Harban (25rsula Calderón Harban, 1925-2003) and her sister-in-law Emeralda Akunya (1921-2005). After the death of Akunya on October 12, 2005 at the age of 84 [2] , “Abuela” (Spanish: “Grandmother”) Calderon is considered the only native speaker of this language. Together with her granddaughter Cristina Zárraga and sister Ursula, Cristina Calderon published the 2005 book Hai Kur Mamashu Shis (“I Want to Tell You a Story”), which contains Yagan tales told to her by older generations of the tribe. Cristina Zarraga translated the book into Spanish, Jacqueline Windh into English ( I want to tell you a story ).

Now Christina Calderon lives in the village of Uquica, on the outskirts of Puerto Williams , and earns a living by selling handmade souvenirs to tourists.
