Biography
She was born on June 11, 1881 in Helsingfors (now Helsinki ), in the Grand Duchy of Finland in the family of a Finnish architect, senator and banker Sebastian Gripenberg .
She studied painting at the Athenaeum, and from 1904 to 1908 - Dresden and Paris .
Later she turned to ballet art and studied dance technique based on Isadora Duncan’s mastery, and in 1910–1911 she studied the methods of rhythm of Dalcroze .
Since 1909, she taught at the dance school at the Finnish National Theater , and in 1911 she gave a solo performance at the theater, becoming one of the first Finnish ballerinas. Later, she toured the Baltic countries , Sweden and the USA . The style created by Gripenberg differed from the classical ballet by spontaneity, despite the fact that the dances were performed barefoot. But the confrontation with the nascent Finnish national ballet was insignificant, and Gripenberg staged several ballets, of which the most famous was Scaramouche.
She was familiar with many famous artists. It is believed that the Latvian artist Janis Rosenthals depicted her in his most famous painting, The Princess and the Monkey (1913).
From 1914 to 1952 she taught dance at a school at the Finnish National Theater, as well as theatrical skills at the Sibelius Academy ; from 1934 to 1952 at the school at the Swedish Theater, and from 1938 to 1946 - at the university at the gymnastics department of the faculty of physical education.
The ballerina also played a major role in the Swedish film Nobelpristagaren , which was her only work as a film actress .
In 1928, already in old age, made her debut as an artist.
In 1951 she was awarded the highest state award of Finland for artists - medal " Pro Finlandia ".
Died July 28, 1976 in Mariehamn, on the Åland Islands .
