Cathedral History

After the Taganrog began to develop outside the fortress in the 1770-1780s, moving further away from it, the need to create a new main city square became obvious [2] . In 1782, a huge area of empty land was allocated for it immediately behind the ramparts on the right side of the axis of the former fortress. In modern landmarks, the area originally occupied the territory from Petrovskaya to Aleksandrovskaya streets between the Nekrasovsky and Ukrainian lanes [2] . Already when allotting space for the new retail space, it was supposed to build a cathedral church on it. At that time, there were two churches in the city - Mikhailovskaya (the former Troitskaya) and Nikolskaya , built in 1778 by the Naval Department , were located on the territory of the former fortress, far from the city developing deep into the cape [2] .

Active participation in the worries about the new church was taken by: the commandant of the fortress I.P. Kasparov , the mayor A. Tikhonov, the city elder I. Sarychev, the ratmans V. Seleznev and F. Esaulenko.

The Assumption Cathedral had a distinctive feature: the entire large space of the temple was placed under one huge dome, and the bell tower stood separately at a distance. Later, the temple and the bell tower were connected by a covered column passage. Upstairs, a tower clock was installed with a battle every hour. Inside the temple had rich paintings, icons and church utensils, was distinguished by a good resonance.

It was not only the main religious building of Taganrog, but also a very important object of the history of the city. In 1825, Emperor Alexander I visited the still unfinished church with his wife Elizaveta Alekseevna , and in subsequent years he was visited by other representatives of the Romanov Dynasty who came to Taganrog. In 1854, the future parents of A.P. Chekhov were married in the cathedral, here in 1860 Anton Chekhov himself was baptized. As a teenager and later, during his visits to his homeland, Anton Pavlovich repeatedly visited the cathedral.

The death of the cathedral

During the installation of the new cross on the dome in August 1912 , the cross suddenly broke off the block and collapsed to the ground. Parishioners saw this as a bad sign. Soon the First World War broke out, then a coup d'etat. Less than 10 years after the described event, the death of the Assumption Cathedral began.

In 1922, direct repression began: the royal gates and the throne , the silver ark, 73 icons, all gold items and jewelry made of precious stones were removed from the cathedral. The process of seizing church property was rude. According to P.P. Filevsky , members of the liquidation committee, disregarding the feelings of believers, entered the altar in hats, laid revolvers on the throne, tearing off the garments from the icons, trampled them underfoot. The parishioners made an attempt to preserve part of the cathedral utensils by bringing silver items (spoons, forks, knives, cup holders, etc.) from their homes in return. But this did not stop the atheists. After the seizure was completed, people brought their icons and lamps to the temple, and worship continued. The rector at that time was E. M. Granovsky .

The decree of the City Council of Taganrog of October 28, 1931 , referring to "the wishes of citizens" ("In order to ensure silence in the city, for the rest of workers and the work of institutions, taking into account the wishes of voters"), bells rang [4] . By 1934, the removal of the bells and their delivery for remelting for industrial needs was completed. In 1936 , to take advantage of the gold of the gilded heads, they removed the metal roof [4] . Subsequently, the cathedral was used to store church utensils of churches that were closed in the city, and then turned into a warehouse for storing grain. In 1938, the temple was destroyed [4] .

Public toilets were built on the site of the cathedral [2] .
