Biography
Born in Bremen on December 12, 1872. In 1890–1895, he attended the Düsseldorf Academy of Arts. In 1895, he settled in the village of Worpswede (near Bremen). Later (in 1918) with F. Mackensen , O. Moderson and others became the founder of the colony of artists and was one of its spiritual leaders.
In 1901 he married Martha Schröder, in the same year their first daughter Marie-Louise was born. In 1903, their second daughter Bettina was born, and in 1905 - the third daughter Martha. In 1926 the couple divorced.
Until 1908, he worked, using his own blueprints, at rebuilding his home in Barkenhof. He was friends with Rilke , worked on the design of the symbolist journal “The Island” (“Die Insel”). He made a trip to Ceylon in 1906. To study the concepts of the “garden city”, he visited England in 1909.
During the First World War he held anti-war positions, then he joined the Communist Party of Germany . In 1929, Vogeler was expelled from the party. In the 1920s, he visited the Soviet Union several times, where he finally moved in 1931.
In September 1941 , as a German, he was deported to the Kazakh SSR , where he died in Korneevka in 1942 .
Second wife (officially since 1926) - Sophia Markhlevskaya , daughter of Polish communist Julian Markhlevsky . Their son, Jürgen Vogeler, born in 1923, is a Soviet philosopher and professor at Moscow State University .
Daughter Marie-Louise (Mike) married writer and journalist Gustav Regler .
