Biography and Creativity
Apprentice Pierre Narsis Guerin .
He painted portraits, of which women’s as well as ideal female heads were more successful for him. In the latter, to some extent imitated Jean-Baptiste Dreams . Several portraits of his work flaunted at the Versailles Museum (portraits of the Empresses Josephine and Maria Louise , etc.).
Dedreux-Dorsey was a close friend of the artist Theodore Gericault . The canvas “The Bather” ( French: La Baigneuse ) is their joint work, Dorsey looked after Gericault during his long illness (caused by a fall from a horse) and was present at his deathbed. After the death of Gericault in 1824, Dorsey bought at auction his most famous work, The Raft of the Medusa , for 6,000 francs, while representatives of the museum in the Louvre were not ready to go beyond 5,000; Subsequently, Dedreux-Dorsey rejected the offer to sell the work in the United States for a much larger amount and eventually ceded it to the Louvre for the same 6,000 with the condition that it will be placed in the main exhibition.
