History
The founder of the monastery in 2003 was the Orthodox Norwegian monk Jonah (in the world Jon Foyn Johannessen - Jon Føyen) [1] [2] , who established a male monastery at his Steinhaugen farm in the mountains of Central Norway. [3] [4]
During his visit to Norway on June 27-28, 2003, the bishop of Vienna and Austria, Hilarion (Alfeyev) , consecrated by Hieromonk Clement (Khukhtamyaki) consecrated a wooden chapel built in the Norwegian style and dedicated to the martyr king Olaf of Norway . [5] The icons of the Savior and Mother of God for the iconostasis of the chapel were painted by icon painters from St. Petersburg.
The monastery was located along the route of the traditional pilgrimage route from Oslo to Trondheim, [6] where the tomb of the Martyr King is located in the Nidaros Cathedral and annually hosts the international festival “Days of St. Olaf of Norway” .
On May 22, 2013, on the day of the celebration of St. Nicholas, Priest Alexander Volokhan, rector of the parish of St. Anna of Novgorod in Trondheim, performed the last liturgy at the monastery, after which the monastery was officially abolished, and the chapel was demolished and moved to Styklestad - the site of the martyrdom of King Olaf of Norway.
