Vienna Singing Society ( German: Wiener Singverein - Wiener Zingferain; official name: Singing Society of the Union of Music Lovers in Vienna) is a concert choir of the Vienna Music Society, with about 230 members.
Content
History
In 1812, an oratorio of K. F. Handel Timotheus ( Das Alexander-Fest ) was performed at the Vienna Hofburg Winter Riding School. This event contributed to the founding of the Union of Music Lovers in Vienna [1]. At the initiative of Antonio Salieri , the first performances of the choir of the Musical Society took place, when, for example, in 1824 he participated in the first performance of the Solemn Mass and the 9th symphony of Ludwig van Beethoven .
In the form in which it exists today, the choir was founded in 1858. The first chief conductor of the choir was Johann Franz von Herbeck , who directed it until his transfer to the Vienna Court Opera in 1866. The Vienna Singing Society acted as the main performer at the premieres of such works as the ping-pong of Franz Schubert the Conspirators, or the Home War , the German Requiem of Johannes Brahms , Te Deum Anton Bruckner , the 8th Symphony by Gustav Mahler , the Book of Seven Seals by Franz Schmidt , as well as works post-war composers Gerd Kühr , Christian Mutshpil, Arvo Pärt , Wolfram Wagner and Otto M. Tsikan.
Since its foundation, the Singing Society has performed in collaboration with renowned conductors such as Franz Schalk, Wilhelm Furtwengler , Dimitris Mitropoulos , Karl Böhm and Leonard Bernstein . From 1947 to 1989, the Heritage of Vienna was led by Herbert von Karajan , who recorded with him many records, audio and video CDs, which brought the choir worldwide fame. In 1957, the Vienna Singing Society became one of the winners of the Karl Renner Prize in Vienna.
The Singing Society undertook concert tours in Australia, Japan and the USA, concerts were also given in Israel, Athens, Berlin, Budapest, Frankfurt, London, Madrid, Moscow, Munich, Paris, Pisa, Rome and Zurich. In addition, under the leadership of G. von Karayan, the Teatum of Anton Bruckner was performed in the Vatican in 1959, as well as the Coronation Mass of V.A. Mozart during the service of Pope John Paul II in the Cathedral of St. Peter the Solemn Mass in 1985.

After Johann Herbek, among the directors of the choir were Johannes Brahms, Ferdinand Grossmann, Reinhold Schmid, Helmut Froschauer. Since 1991, the choir has been led by Johannes Prince.

2008 Anniversary and Current
The jubilee season of 150 years of the Vienna Singing Society in 2008 was marked by a concert trip to Moscow (the solemn part was held at the Moscow Tchaikovsky Conservatory), as well as a ceremony and a joint concert with the Vienna Singing Academy. During the season, he twice sounded the Requiem of Hector Berlioz - both in the building of the Vienna Musical Society, and in the Vienna Konzerthaus. The last anniversary concerts were held in Amsterdam and Vienna, when together with the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra under the direction of Maris Jansons, 4 performances of Requiem (op. 89) by Antonin Dvorak were given. Concert of Leonard Bernstein and the Solemn Mass with Cardinal Christoph Schönborn at St. Stephen's Cathedral , during which the Mass was performed in C major op. 86 Ludwig van Beethoven.
The 2009-2010 season began with a concert trip to Japan, where a concert was held in Itsumi Hall in Osaka, where oratorio Joseph Haydn's Creation and Requiem of Johannes Brahms were heard. Under the leadership of Nikolaus Arnoncourt, the execution of the Book with seven seals of Franz Schmidt timed to coincide with its 80th anniversary took place. And in honor of the 85th anniversary of Pierre Boulez, the composer himself conducted a concert with the participation of the Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra and the Vienna Singing Society; at the same time, the Night Song ( Symphony No. 3 , op. 27) of Karol Szymanowski , the Psalms Symphony by Igor F. Stravinsky and the Glagolic Mass of Leos Janacek were sounded. In addition, the Christian Thielemann choir was first involved in the performance of the 9th Beethoven Symphony as part of the full cycle of Beethoven symphonies performed by the Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra. So, in the 2010 Vienna Summer Night Concert in Schönbrunn Palace with the participation of the Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra, which was broadcast live by the Austrian radio and 3Sat station, the Vienna Singing Society also performed the Lunar Choir from the opera Windsor Pranks Otto Nikolai . After two performances by the oratorio of Arthur Honegger, Jeanne d'Arc at the stake in the Brucknerhaus in Linz and Vienna, together with the Vienna Radio Symphony Orchestra led by Bertrand de Billy, Johann Vokalek , Peter Matich, Herbert Lippert and the Vienna Boys Choir, the choir toured with this piece also at the Salzburg Festival in the Felsenreitschule Hall. This was the last concert of Biyi as the main conductor of the Vienna Radio Symphony Orchestra, Fanny Ardant sang the part of Jeanne. At the Grafenagg Music Festival, the Singing Society performed with the cantata of Felix Mendelssohn-Bartholdy First Walpurgis Night (MWV D 3).
To celebrate the 100th anniversary of the first performance of the 8th symphony ( Symphony of a Thousand ) by Gustav Mahler, in which the Singing Society participated in September 1910, the choir was invited along with the Philharmonic Choir of Munich and the Boys' Choir of the Bavarian city of Bad Tölz. The jubilee performances of the Thousand Symphony were held at the Munich Gasteig Philharmonic in October 2010 under the direction of Christian Thielemann. In 2011, concerts were prepared with works by Olivier Messian , Dmitry Shostakovich and Gustav Mahler under the direction of Benjamin Britten, John Steiner, Henry Balfour Gardiner and Peter Planavsky, as well as a program from the works of Bach and Handel led by Johannes Prince. For the first time, performances were led by Cornelius Meister and Gustavo Dudamel. The latter at the Salzburg Festival conducted Mahler's Second Symphony .
During the anniversary concerts in honor of the 200th anniversary of the Vienna Musical Society, choral works by Praise of Music and Venite Gentes by Antonio Salieri with conductor Ricardo Muti, as well as the Songs of Gurre Arnold Schönberg under the direction of Zubin Meta with the assistance of the male choir of the Vienna Opera and the Vienna Chamber Choir were performed in May and June 2012. Also in the spring of 2012, three concerts were held in the Golden Hall of the Vienna Philharmonic under the direction of Vladimir Fedoseyev, in which, along with the symphonic music of P.I. Tchaikovsky and S.I. Taneev , the Taneyev cantata Ioann Damaskin also performed by the Vienna Singing Society. In September 2012, the choir will have a concert trip to Moscow, where Tsar David, an oratorio by Arthur Onegger, will be performed in the Great Hall of the Conservatory together with the Tchaikovsky Symphony Orchestra under the direction of Vladimir Fedoseyev.
In November 2012, under the guidance of Nikolaus Arnoncourt, the Handel Timotheus choral work will again be performed in the Golden Hall of the Vienna Musical Society, whose performance in 1812 became one of the most important impulses for the foundation of the Society of Music Lovers.
