Biography

Childhood

Hazel Dulsey Miner was born on April 11, 1904 in , USA . Her father was William Miner, her mother was Blanche Miner. Hazel had Zelda's older sister and younger brothers and sister: Emmett, Mirdit and Howard. [2] . The document registrar, with her daughter Hazel as a child, described Miner as a “quiet girl” [3] .

Miner, along with Emmett and Mirdit, studied at a one-room school , and in 1920 she was an eighth-grader. In the future, she planned to continue her education in a secondary school in Bismarck [4] .

Doom

On March 15, 1920, students of a one-room school were released from classes earlier than usual so that they could get home before the storm [3] . The miners rode home on their own horses, but due to bad weather, the teacher did not allow them to ride alone [5] . William Miner came to school to accompany the children home. He tied the horse to the sleigh on which the children were sitting, and he himself went to the school shed. Hazel was unable to restrain the horse, and the animal fled with the sled [4] .

William Mineer was unable to find children, and he returned home and formed a search group. Residents of the city began the search, along the way, calling friends for help on the phone [6] .

Despite the fact that Hazel was familiar with the road, she quickly lost because of the snowfall, which prevented visibility. She was wearing a coat, hat, gloves and boots, but they did not completely protect against the cold, and Miner was very cold. As her brother later recalled, she said that her boots were “full of water” [4] . Soon she lost sight of the road, but for some landmarks she continued to drive the sled [3] [4] .

After some time, the sleigh, having hit an unknown barrier, turned over. Miners could not return them to a vertical position even by joint efforts. Then Hazel decided to use the sled as a shelter and lie under them. She had three blankets, on two of which she packed her brother and sister, and the third she covered them. Hazel told Emmett and Mirdit stories, sang the song " America the Beautiful " and read " Our Father " so that they would not fall asleep [3] . She made them promise not to sleep [5] . Miners heard dogs barking all night, but no one came to them [7] .

A search group of more than thirty men searched for children throughout the night, but they were discovered only in the morning, twenty-five hours after the disappearance [3] . According to the recollections of the group members, Hazel lay beside her brother and sister, hugging them. She took off her coat and covered Emmett and Mirdit with it. Both children survived [4] [8] .

Three children were taken to the house of one of the residents of the city of William Stark [4] . There, Hazel was provided with medical care, but despite this, a few hours later she died. Blanche Miner subsequently said that Hazel came to her in a dream and said: “I was cold, mother, but no more” [4] . At the funeral of Miner, the clergyman quoted a line from the Gospel of John : “There is no longer that love, as if someone would lay down his soul for his friends” ( 15:13 ) [4] .

Memory

Hazel Miner became a national heroine after her story gained fame [4] .

  • In honor of Miner, it was planned to build an orphanage or hospital, but in the end, a memorial to her memory was erected with the money raised by benefactors [4] .
  • In 1936, a Hazel granite monument was erected in front of the Oliver County Courthouse. [3]
  • In 1952, North Dakota-based artist Elmer Halvorson painted two paintings depicting Hazel Miner. They were published in February 1953 in the Ford Times [9] .
